Rule 1 • Silent Letters <t, b, l, w>
Certain letters are silent in English orthography: t (fas•ten, lis•ten), b (climb, doubt), l (half), and w (an•swer).
Rule 2 & 6 • Soft <c> Sound
c says /s/ before e, i, or y (sen•tence, cen•tral, med•i•cine). Silent e causes c to say its soft sound.
Rule 3, 4, 5 • Vowel Variations
/ŭ/ spelled oo (blood); [Deb] /ŭ/ can be u, o, oe, oo, or ou; /ōr/ spelled oor (poor).
