📚 Rules to Remember • Week 9
Rule 1 • Double Consonants
Double the middle consonant to protect a short vowel in the 1st syllable (bet•ter, din•ner, sum•mer, bot•tom).
Rule 2 • Syllable Division
Divide between two consonants (hap•pen). If two vowels are both voiced, divide between them (qui•et).
Rule 3 • /ā/ Spelled <ea>
/ā/ spelled ea only in great, break, and steak (and derivations like break•fast).
