Rule 1 • Double End 1-1-1 Rule
When a 1-syllable word ends in 1 vowel + 1 consonant, double the consonant before a vowel suffix (step•ped, stop•ping).
Rule 2 • Double End 2-1-1 Rule
When a 2-syllable word with an accented 2nd syllable ends in 1 vowel + 1 consonant, double the consonant (be•gin•ning).
Rule 3 • Protecting the Short Vowel
Doubling consonants prevents the base vowel from becoming open and saying its long sound (hop•ping vs. hoping).
Rule 4 • Homophone Pairs
Distinguish past-tense -ed verbs from nouns/adjectives: missed/mist, guessed/guest, passed/past.
