Rule 1 • Suffix <-tion>
Latin suffix -tion says /ʃən/ (ac•tion, di•rec•tion, at•ten•tion) or /tʃən/ after s (ques•tion).
Rule 2 • Endings <-et> & <-el>
Unaccented -et says /ĭt/ (pock•et, tick•et); multi-syllable words ending in -el divide before -el (nick•el).
Rule 3 • Endings <-ure> & <-ar>
Unaccented -ure says /jər/ or /tʃər/ (fig•ure, pic•ture); -ar says /ər/ (reg•u•lar, dol•lar, cal•en•dar).
Rule 4 • Base Words & Confusables
Base words: sense and speech; differentiate picture/pitcher and addition/edition.
