Rule 1 & 2 • Short /ĕ/ Spelled <ea>
ea frequently says short /ĕ/ (head, bread, dead, death, weather, measure, heavy, pleasant).
Rule 3 • /zh/ Spelled <su>
In measure, su represents the voiced postalveolar fricative /zh/ before unaccented -ure.
Rule 4 & 5 • /er/ Spelled <ear>
The phonogram ear says /er/ as in search, heard, early, earth, learn, learned.
Rule 6 • Final <-y> Says /ē/
Unaccented final -y says long /ē/ in multi-syllable words (heav•y, ear•ly).
