Rule 1 • <eigh> Says /ā/ or /ī/
eigh says /ā/ as in eight, weight, neighbor; uniquely says /ī/ in height.
Rule 2 • <ei> after <c>
Use ei after c to spell /ē/ (deceive, receive, receipt).
Rule 3 • <ei> Exceptions Saying /ē/
Exceptions to memorize: either, neither, leisure, seize, weird.
Rule 4 • Greek <rh> in <rhythm>
Words of Greek origin use rh for the /r/ sound (rhythm; note that y acts as the vowel).
