📚 Rules to Remember • Week 16
Rule 1 • Suffix <-ed> Sounds
Past tense suffix -ed has three pronunciations: /t/ (asked, looked), /d/ (called, played, stayed, filled), or /ed/.
Rule 2 • Adding Suffix <-ing>
A suffix is added to a base word. Do not drop single vowel y when adding -ing (trying, crying).
[Deb] Rule 3 • <oe> in <goes> and <does>
e is added to protect vowel o in goes (/ō/); does has irregular short /u/ pronunciation (/dŭz/).
Rule 4 • Homophone Distinction
Distinguish homophones: sealing (fastening a container) vs. ceiling (top of a room).
