Phonogram ough represents several sounds: /aw/ before t (bought, brought, thought), /ō/ (though), /ōō/ (through), and /ŭf/ (enough, tough).
Rule 2 • Vowel Team <ou>
The vowel team ou can say short /ŭ/ (touch, young) or /ōō/ (group).
Rule 3 • Prefix <be->
The prefix be- forms an open first syllable with a relaxed /ĭ/ sound (before, because, between).
Rule 4 • Spelling Hint <friend>
Remember: "A friend to the end" (has end inside). Distinguish homophones threw (hurled) and through (in one side and out the other).
