Rule 1 • Suffix <-ible> vs. <-able>
-able is added to complete base words; -ible is used with Latin root stems (responsible) and to keep c or g soft.
Rule 2 • Suffixes <-ent> & <-al>
Latin suffix -ent forms nouns and adjectives (incident, accident, innocent); adding -al + -ly forms adverbs (accidentally).
Rule 3 • Tricky Academic Spellings
Remember: "there is a rat in sep•a•rat•e", restaurant has au, and unaccented -ar says /ər/ (similar, particular).
Rule 4 • Homophone Distinction
Distinguish gait (pace/manner of walking) from gate (a hinged portal or barrier).
