Rule 1 • Suffix <-ege> vs. <-edge>
Words ending in -ege (col•lege, priv•i•lege) have no d. Remember: "It's a privilege to go to college."
Rule 2 • Phonogram <ie> Pronounced /ē/
The digraph ie represents long /ē/ after consonants other than c (a•chieve, re•lief).
Rule 3 • Double Final Consonant (Accented 2nd Syllable)
Two-syllable verbs with the accent on the second syllable double the final consonant before adding vowel suffixes (oc•cur → oc•cur•ring, oc•curred, oc•cur•rence; re•ferred).
Rule 4 • Homophone Pairs: <toes/tows> & <toad/towed>
Toes (feet) vs. tows (pulls). Toad (amphibian, spelled oa) vs. towed (pulled behind, past tense with -ed).
