The Greek-derived suffix -ize attaches to roots to form verbs meaning "to make" or "become" (a•pol•o•gize, re•al•ize, re•cog•nize, crit•i•cize).
Rule 2 • Suffixes <-ant> and <-ance>
-ance forms abstract nouns of state or action (dis•tance, ac•quaint•ance, ap•pear•ance); -ant forms adjectives/nouns (bril•liant).
Rule 3 • Suffix <-iar> Saying /jər/
In pe•cu•liar and fa•mil•iar, the vowel i acts as a /j/ glide sound before -ar.
Rule 4 • Homophone Pairs: <wait/weight> & <waist/waste>
