Rule 1 • Homophones: <principal> vs. <principle>
Memory hint: "The principal is your pal" (-pal refers to a leader/chief). Principle ends in -le like rule.
Rule 2 • Suffix <-sion> Sounds
-sion says /ʒən/ after a vowel in de•ci•sion, oc•ca•sion, but says /ʃən/ after a consonant in pro•fes•sion, dis•cus•sion.
Rule 3 • Double <ss> in Latin Bases
Latin roots retain double ss across word families: suc•cess, pos•sess, pro•gress, dis•cuss.
Rule 4 • Suffix <-al> Forms Adjectives
-al forms adjectives relating to a noun base: phys•ic → phys•ic•al (Greek phys- says /fɪz/).
