Rule 1 • Compound Words
Two complete base words combine without a hyphen to create a new single word (in•side, out•side, with•out, may•be, can•not).
Rule 2 • Plural of <-f/-fe> is <-ves>
When words end in f or fe, change f to v and add -es: him•self → them•selves (also leaf → leaves).
Rule 3 • Unaccented Schwa /ə/ in Compounds
Vowels in unaccented syllables often reduce to schwa /ə/ (up•on, a•noth•er, to•day, for•get).
Rule 4 • Homophone Distinctions: <knot> vs. <not>
Knot (rope tie, begins with silent k: kn-) vs. not (negation particle, starts with n).
