📚 Rules to Remember • Week 22
Rule 1 • The Change Rule for <y>
When a word ends in a single consonant + y, change y to i before adding any suffix that does not begin with i (cry → cries, hurry → hurried).
Rule 2 • Degree Suffixes <-er> and <-est>
Comparative and superlative forms also follow the rule: pretty → prettier, early → earlier, easy → easiest.
Rule 3 • Suffixes <-ness> and <-ful>
Noun and adjective suffixes trigger the change: happy → happiness, busy → business, beauty → beautiful.
Rule 4 • Homophone Distinctions: <pain> vs. <pane>
Pain (ache/hurt, spelled with vowel team ai) vs. pane (window glass, spelled with split vowel-e a_e).
