📚 Rules to Remember • Week 22
Rule 1 • Silent <c> in Digraph
In Latin-origin words like scene, science, fascinate, discipline, scissors, the digraph sc represents the single sound /s/.
Rule 2 • Suffix <-ous> Means "Full Of"
-ous turns nouns into adjectives meaning "possessing or full of": nervous (full of nerves), jealous, serious, humorous.
Rule 3 • Spelling /sh/ with <ci> & <sci>
In words like delicious, conscious, conscience, appreciate, the letters ci or sci before a vowel represent the /ʃ/ ("sh") sound.
Rule 4 • Syllable Count in <mischievous>
Mischievous has only 3 syllables: mis•chie•vous (/ˈmɪs.tʃɪ.vəs/). Do not insert an extra syllable ("mis-chee-vee-us").
