Part 2: Orthographic Secrets & 19th-Century Classroom Artifacts
Phonics Clues • Historical Realia
Silent Letters & Syllable Laws:
• Silent l in chalk: Broad a followed by -lk drops the /l/ sound (/tʃɔːk/), as in walk and talk.
• Silent k in knife: Initial Germanic kn- simplifies to unvoiced /n/ (/naɪf/).
• Suffix -er: Agentive noun suffix in teach-er, rul-er, point-er, blott-er (doubled t in blotter!).
Why Did Pupils Have a Slate & Knife?
• Slate: Before cheap wood-pulp paper was invented, children did math and spelling on reusable slate tablets.
• Knife: Known as a penknife, carried by students and teachers to trim quill nibs and whittle graphite pencils.
• Blotter: Porous felt paper pressed on wet dip-pen ink so pages wouldn't smudge.
