Phonics & Spelling Rules to Remember (a, e, i, o)
Rule 1 • Short Vowels (˘)
A single vowel in a closed syllable makes its short sound (marked with a breve ˘): stămp, sĕnd, trĭll, pŏnd.
Rule 2 • Long Vowels (¯)
A vowel in a VCe (Magic E) pattern makes its long sound (marked with a macron ¯): lāke, hēre, fīne, nōte.
Rule 3 • Special Patterns
• -ld exception: gōld has long ō.
• FLOSS rule: double -ll in trĭll, stĭll.
• -ck rule: sĭck ends in -ck after short ĭ.
