Letter c says soft /s/ before e or i (sinçe, priçe, miçe, çity, çent, dançe, plaçe). Marked with a cedilla ç.
Rule 2 • Hard C (c̄) Before Consonants
Letter c says hard /k/ before consonants (c̄lip) or at the end of a syllable/word (zinc̄). Marked with a bar c̄.
Rule 3 • Poetry Rhyme: -aces
In Stevenson's poem, façes and plaçes share the exact same soft c sound before the plural suffix -es.
