“Near the hedge, in the soft green grass, grew a daisy. She turned toward the warm sun, looked up to the blue sky, and listened to the lark singing high in the air.
The daisy admired the happy bird who could sing so sweetly and fly so high; but she was not sad because she could not do the same.
‘I can see and hear,’ thought she; ‘the sun shines upon me, and the wind kisses me. What else do I need to make me happy?’”

Rule 1 • Long ē Spelling Teams
The long ē sound (/iː/) can be spelled by open e (she, me), vowel team ee (green, see), or team ea (near, hear).
Rule 2 • Short vs Long Sounds
A breve (ĕ, ĭ) marks short vowels as in hedge and wind. A macron (ē, ī) marks long vowels.
Rule 3 • Spellings of Long ī
Long ī can be spelled with i-consonant-e (shines), -igh (high), or open y (sky, fly).
